Paul Anthony Scheckel, 50, beloved oldest son of Larry and Ann Scheckel, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Gundersen Medical Center of complications of pneumonia.

Paul was born to Lawrence (Larry) and Ann (Martin) Scheckel on May 23, 1966, at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse. Paul had a gentle spirit and a beautiful smile. He taught us the true meaning of love and family and the realization that as long as we have each other, nothing else matters.

We would like to thank his doctors and nurses at Gundersen for all of the loving care they gave Paul. We would also like to thank Melissa, Deja, and Kari and the many very special caregivers at his group home. We especially wish to express our deep gratitude to Barb Christenson of Western Wisconsin Cares for her extraordinary efforts and dedication to ensure that Paul had the best life possible, despite the challenges of his autism. Paul’s organs were donated to the UW-Madison Transplant Program. Through his gifts of life to others, Paul leaves a lasting legacy.

He is survived by his parents, Larry and Ann, of Tomah; his brothers, Dan, of LaFarge, and Patrick (Dana) Scheckel, of Madison. He is further survived by his nephew, Teddy, and his niece, Marit Scheckel, of Madison, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Alvin and Martha (Lewig) Scheckel, of Seneca, and his maternal grandparents, Leonard and Loretta (Foley) Martin, of Eastman.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church (St. Mary’s) in Tomah with Monsignor Roger Scheckel officiating. A visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service, Saturday, at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Immediately following the burial, a luncheon will be served in the church hall. Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Queen of the Apostles Guardian Angel Fund for Tuition Assistance or to Autism Speaks.org. “The capacity of the heart for love is infinite.”
