Joannie Carol Sheckler
A loving mother and grandma, Joannie Carol Sheckler, 83, of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, at the Prairie Maison Care Center.
She was born Oct. 25, 1933, in the old Fourth Ward of Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Joseph and Esther (Tippery) Pitzer. She married Russell “Dick” Sheckler on Dec. 13, 1952. He preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1999. Joannie always managed to work full-time and raise her family. She loved to fish with her sisters and enjoyed music and dancing. She spent many happy hours tending to her large yard.
She is survived by her children, Sandra (Bill) Herreid, DeAnn (Todd) McWilliams, Rich Sheckler and Lisa (Mark) Mara, all of Prairie du Chien; her brothers, Leonard (Mickey) Pitzer, of Youngstown, Ohio, and Jim (Yvonne) Pitzer, of Fitchburg; her sisters Faye (Frank) Tesar, of Prairie du Chien, and Helen Wilterdink, of West Bend; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son Terry; a brother Joseph Pitzer; sisters, Charlotte Mae Pitzer and Esther Biederman; brothers-in-law Robert and Ted Sheckler; and Dick Wilterdink along with a sister-in-law Betty Sheckler.
A private family memorial service will be Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Barb Cook officiating with interment in the Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Walter Schmidt Home, 424 N. Beaumont Rd., Prairie du Chien, WI 53821.
