American Queen Steamboat Company representatives were in Prairie du Chien Nov. 29 to discuss with city benefactors the future opportunities of hosting tourist stops of the cruise boat.

“They’re wanting to bring more boat visits here, but Prairie du Chien is semi-dysfunctional, so they want to know who is in charge,” tourism council chair Mary Antoine said.

This information was shared at a tourism council meeting Dec. 8. The American Queen’s off-shore tour coordinator communicated at the Nov. 29 meeting that he wishes to be in contact with only one person instead of, as it has been, many from city government, the chamber, the main street organization, the tourism council and the museums.

“We need to talk and determine who is in charge if we’re going to try to feed into their on-board programs as well,” Antoine added.

Another request of the company is for those benefactors to discuss the possibility of businesses opening early with certain tourism-centered merchants in the city.

The American Queen is eyeing stops in Prairie du Chien on Aug. 3 and Aug. 10 as well as a stop of the company’s newest American Duchess ship on July 26.

“We want them here, but we need to continue communicating with them about what they want,” Antoine said.
