Nancy (Boyles) Kaisner Bruce Ball passed away on Tuesday evening, Nov. 22, at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Hospital, Tyler, Texas, after a brief illness. 

 

Nancy Earl Boyles was born on Aug. 10, 1935, in Amarillo, Texas, to Earl E. (Epp) Boyles and Frances Jane (Rutledge) Boyles. Nancy attended Amarillo schools, graduating from Amarillo High School in 1954.

 

She graduated from Odessa Junior College with honors, and was named to Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges. She was elected to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and was editor of the school paper. Nancy graduated with honors from Texas Tech in 1957. She was named outstanding senior woman in journalism. She was elected to the Phi Kappa Phi honor society, and was editor of the Texas Techsan Alumni Association magazine.

 

She taught journalism and served as Director of Publications at Lubbock High School from 1958-1962, where her students won multiple state and national awards. From 1962-1972, she taught English, journalism, and speech at Bedford (Iowa) Community High School, where her students also won state and national awards.

 

In 1969, Nancy received her master’s degree (with honors in English) from Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Mo.

 

Along with her husband Frank, Nancy owned, edited and published the North Iowa Times, a weekly newspaper in McGregor, Iowa, from 1973-1976. In 1975, the paper was named first in the state for general excellence in its circulation category. Nancy also served as Director of the Garnavillo (Iowa) Public Library, from 1976-1990. She was recognized for building the circulation from one of the smallest in the state to first in the state in its population category, and maintaining that rank throughout her tenure. Nancy also developed the library’s summer reading program that won state awards and recognition.

 

In 1991, at age 55, Nancy entered nurse’s training to enable her to better care for her husband Frank, who by then was ill with Alzheimer’s disease. Nancy received her RN degree shortly after his death in 1994. Nancy practiced as an RN for four years in both Missouri and Louisiana, prior to her retirement in 1998. 

 

Nancy was preceded in death by husbands John U. Kaisner and Frank M. Bruce, and by her parents.

 

She is survived by her husband, John M. Ball of Tyler, Texas; one sister, Dr. Sammye Jane (Boyles) Guenther, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one son, John Randal (Randy) Kaisner, of Richardson, Texas; three daughters, Keridan Kaisner, of Marietta, Ga., B. Cameron (Bruce) Schultz of San Diego, Calif., and Jodee Bruce of Tyler, Texas; one step-daughter, Charvelle (Ball) Jones, of Mt. Enterprise, Texas; three grandchildren, Kristofer Newcamp, Anetta Newcamp, and Lily Schultz; one great-grandson, Tobias Newcamp; and one rat terrier, Pixie.

 

Visitation will be Saturday, Nov. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m., Jackson’s Burks-Walker-Tippit Funeral Home in Tyler. Graveside services will be Monday, Nov. 28, 2 p.m., Fairview Cemetery, Chetopa, Kan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Smith County, Texas.
