The McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce held its annual awards dinner Nov. 7, recognizing the work businesses throughout the two communities, as well as Prairie du Chien, have done to promote the area.

“Everybody comes together,” shared the chamber’s president, Anne Kruse. Looking out over the room, “these are the people who get everything to run.”

“We are very busy towns,” Kruse added. “We’re known as a place to go where you don’t have to make plans; you can come to town and there’s always something to do.”

Carolyn Gallagher, the chamber’s executive director, also noted the importance of the business community.

“I look around this room and I see great, hardworking people who open their business doors and hearts to these communities and visitors,” she said. “I also see those who do all they can to promote this beautiful area, those who make sure things are running smoothly and those keeping people informed.”

Four businesses/individuals were recognized for their efforts at the awards dinner, including McGregor resident Maureen Wild, who received the Alexander McGregor Award. The award recognized Wild for her progressive leadership and her significant investment in helping develop the area.

Upon accepting the award, Wild noted she was shocked but humbled.

“There are so many hardworking people who work to make McGregor what it is,” she said. “We don’t choose me or you—we choose us. That’s why we do so well.”

The James King Award was presented to Dave Martin, from the Marquette Bar and Cafe, for his dedication to supporting community efforts.

Paul and Monica Tiffany, who recently opened McGregor Mercantile in a remodeled downtown building, received the Lena D. Myers Award, in appreciation of their contribution to preserving the historical heritage of the community.

The North Iowa Times was honored with the Longevity Award, in recognition of its 160 years of service to the area communities.

While the night was full of celebration, it was also bittersweet for Gallagher. The event marked her final duty as the chamber’s executive director. Her husband recently accepted a new job in Cedar Rapids, forcing them to relocate.

Gallagher told the crowd she’s appreciated the opportunities  the position has given her over 4.5 years.

“I have met such wonderful people from all over the world,” she stated. “I have had the privilege of supporting the valued members of the chamber and promoting tourism in the area.”

Gallagher said she hopes the next director will offer new ideas and great energy, leading the communities to bigger and better things.

“There is so much promise for a bright future, and, with due diligence and perseverance, the sky is the limit,” she said. “I wish nothing but continued success for each and every one of you.”

Since her husband’s family is in Waukon, Gallagher said she hopes to visit the area often. The communities will never be forgotten, she added.

“McGregor and Marquette have a piece of my heart that will stay here always,” she concluded.
