William Daniel McCoy, 91, of Prairie du Chien passed away Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Crossing River’s Hospital.

Bill was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Harrisburgh, Ill. The son of Jack and Violet (Brown) McCoy. He grew up in Wauzeka. Bill and his brother (best friend) Jack McCoy spent their youth growing up in the bottoms of the Kickapoo and Wisconsin Rivers. At the age of 13, Bill lost his left arm in a duck hunting accident. He graduated from Wauzeka High School in 1942. At the age of 16, Bill attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated summa cum laude in 1946 with a degree in Civil Engineering. 

He worked for the Corps of Civil Engineers throughout the state. He was the assistant City Engineer in La Crosse, from 1953-1956. In 1956, he moved his family to Prairie du Chien, where he formed McCoy Construction Company, Inc.. He built many bridges throughout southwest Wisconsin. He worked in the construction field until 1980. Bill semi retired and owned and operated Timber Lanes in Prairie for several years until retirement. 

In 1953, Bill married Partricia McGinley and recently celebrated there 63rd wedding anniversary. Bill and Pat were blessed with four children: son David (Lori), of Prairie du Sac, Mary (Steve) Hedeman, of Monroe, Cindy (Scott) Sutton, of Prairie du Chien, and Diana (Dennis) Varo, of Baroda, Mich. He has eight grandchildren: Ben, Joel, Brandon, Sara, Ryan, Dayna, Karlen and Kali; six great grand children: Liam, Tess, Addy, Cullen, Aiden and Jackson; a brother-in-law, Robert (Joan)McGinley; James McGinley; Marie McCoy; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Violet and Jack McCoy; two brothers, Jack and Daniel McCoy; sisters-in-law, Maxine McCoy and Chancey McGinley.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. James Weighner officiating with interment in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Sunday, Oct. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, where there will be a wake scripture at 7 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Crossing Rivers Hospice Program or Prairie Catholic Schools.
