Rev. Janice “Jan” Rose Trautsch McGrath, of Fredericksburg, Texas, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on Thursday, Sept. 15, at the age of 72 years.

She was born Feb. 1, 1944, in Crawford County, the daughter of Harry and Edna Seymour Trautsch. She and Hazel M. Hanson joined their lives together on May 2, 1978, in Northfield, Minn. Jan held a graduate diploma in Pastoral Ministries and was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg. She was an active member and officer in the local American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life, formerly volunteered at the Good Samaritan Center, had served as president of LACARE in Burnet, Texas, and most recently helped Hill Country CARES furnish their local office.

Jan was a faithful pastor to all of God’s people, especially to those in danger of “falling through the cracks.” She was a proud deliverer of the U.S. Mail and a builder of furniture. A fan of the outdoors, she loved camping, campfires, fishing, working in her garden, and traveling around the country, especially to visit her family. For weeks, she anticipated spring break, when children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren would all descend upon Grandma Jan’s house for ice cream, dominoes, playing cards, and jumping on the trampoline.

Her favorite time of the year was Christmas and she delighted in decorating the tree with special ornaments from family and friends, watching holiday movies, and listening to the music of the season.

Jan is survived by her spouse, Hazel M. Hanson, of Fredericksburg, Texas, and her three daughters and their spouses, Sherri and Tom Langfeldt, of Fairbault, Minn.; Deborah and Pat Wagner, of Northfield, Minn.; and Cindy McGrath, of Bloomington, Minn. She is also survived by 26 grandchildren: Stephanie and Trace Roshell; Benjamin; Ramontica; Tasha; Anthony; Gabrielle; Ashley; Zachary; Katherine; Grace and Patrick Langfeldt; Breanna and Rob Callahan; Misty and Eric Burton; Kurt Mara; Jeremy and Tricia Wagner; Nathaniel and Yukako Wagner; Justin and Anna Wagner; Selena; Lucy; Riley; Savannah; Isaac; and Katherine Wagner; Michael Wahlberg; Kerianne Wahlberg; and Nicholas Smith. And, she is survived by eight great grandchildren: Mira Callahan; Johnny; Madelyn and Connor Wagner; Peter and Luke Wagner; Harrison Wagner; Sean Mara. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Mardell and Bill Winter, of Prairie du Chien; her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Beth Trautsch, of Eastman; and her three sisters-in-laws, Dixie and her husband John Starkovich, Shirley Hanson, and Mavis Lissa; plus a niece, two nephews, two puppies, a cat and an abundance of friends.

A loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Susan Janice McGrath Mara.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, Texas, with Rev. Jeff Hammond officiating. There will be a second memorial service in Prairie du Chien, Oct. 22, followed by a private family disposition of her cremains.

Those who so desire may make memorial contributions in her memory to Stonewall Volunteer Fire Department, American Cancer Society, ASPCA, Hill Country CARES, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice.

Arrangements and direction by the Schaetter Funeral Home of Fredericksburg. Expressions of sympathy may be sent at www.schaetter.com.
