Prairie cross country does well

The girls’ and boys’ Prairie du Chien cross country teams competed well in their first meet at Darlington on Saturday despite the fact that it was the first race ever for much of the young team.

The girls’ varsity team placed seventh out of 22 schools. Amber Huser had a great race. She finished first on the team and 17th overall. Freshman Karly Jaynes finished close behind in 20th place. Ella Hein finished third for the team and 29th overall after recovering from a tough fall in the first half of the race.  Faith Dillman also had a strong race, finishing in 36th out of about 200 runners. Maddie LaRocque and Bella Cummuta rounded out the varsity team.  Five freshman girls: Allison Riebe, Nicole Steiber, Mari Hauschildt, Harlee Eastman, and Madalyn Roche all reached personal goals in the junior varsity race.

Only three Prairie du Chien runners competed in the boys’ varsity race. Magnus Goltermann finished first for the team in his first cross country race ever. Freshman Jayce Sexton was not far behind and sophomore Blake Bartels was third for the team, just 30 seconds off his personal best.

The Prairie du Chien girls’ cross country team raced incredibly well in the hot, humid weather Tuesday evening to place third out of 16 schools.  They edged out Boscobel by 1 point, beating them for the first time in recent history.

“Our top five girls raced extremely well. They passed girls when they needed to and didn’t give up even though the course was hilly and the weather was really hot and humid,” said Assistant Coach Alli Klein.

Ella Hein and Amber Huser both came away with medals for 11th and 14th places respectively. Faith Dillman raced beautifully for 17th place. Karly Jaynes finished just behind her in 20th place. Maddie LaRocque finished fifth for the team. She kept her sights on the girls in front of her and didn’t let them slip away.

“I’m very happy with the way the girls ran tonight,” said Head Coach Kathleen Hein.

Unfortunately, the boys didn’t  have enough members to compete as a team.

On Thursday, Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m., the cross country team races against Platteville in their first home meet of the season at LaRiviere Park.
