New county

telephone system

to improve safety

By Ted Pennekamp

Crawford County will soon be getting a new county wide telephone system for the County Administration Building, the Law Enforcement/Courthouse Building and the Highway Department Building.

The new system will replace the current system which is more than 20 years old and outdated, said 911 Coordinator Julie Cipra, who noted that the new telephone system will probably be installed within the next three or four months.

“Our goal is to have the new telephone system by the end of the year,” said Cipra. She said the current system is failing and it’s no longer supported. “We can’t get parts and equipment,” she said. “It’s technologically outdated.”

Cipra said the new telephone system is expected to cost $109,000 and will be an Internet protocol (IP) system, which is what most government agencies are going to. “It’s a next generation system,” she said.

In addition to the new telephone system, a new intercom/speaker system will also be installed. Wiring for the new IP telephone system plus the installation of the intercom/speaker system is expected to cost approximately $22,500. With the intercom system, the Sheriff’s Department dispatcher will be able to notify all employees and members of the public in the Administrative Building and the Law Enforcement/Courthouse Building in case of a tornado or other emergency.

The new IP telephone system will be a ShoreTel system purchased through CenturyLink.

At its Aug. 16 meeting, the Crawford County Board voted to give itself the authority to borrow up to $800,000 for various capital improvement projects including a new telephone system, an intercom/speaker system, a 911 system, a call recorder, a UPS system, wiring, communication towers/radio system upgrades, EMS Channel simulcast, server replacement/optional VPN, and trans technology including software, maintenance and support for the departments of Real Property Lister, Treasurer, Register of Deeds, Zoning and Land Conservation.

The new 911 system would replace the current system that is 20 years old. The process of replacing the 911 system is being reviewed and it is expected to be replaced in 2017.

“We have to have an updated telephone system in order to be compatible with the new 911 system we will be getting in 2017,” explained Cipra.

Cipra said that at some point in the future, the new telephone system may be able to allow texting and video.

“It’s important we’re replacing it now before it fails,” she said.
