Erwin “Erv” Mueller, 77, Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully surrounded with the love of his family on July 23, at the Crossing Rivers Health Center, Prairie du Chien after a brief illness. 

He was born at home in Read Township, Clayton County Iowa to Harry and Marie (Bente) Mueller Nov. 27, 1938, was baptized and confirmed at the Peace United Church of Christ of Elkader, Iowa.

Erv started his education at rural Read Township School and later attended and graduated from Central Community School of Elkader. There he met the love of his life Karen Polkow and was united in marriage on Sept. 18, 1959 at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. To this union they were blessed with three daughters, Brenda, Penny and Vikki. 

Erv started out farming and then moved his family to Prairie du Chien, in 1961 where he originally worked at the Tool Company. He then started working for over thirty-five years at the original Piggly Wiggly in the Garden Center and eventually was Produce Manager there and Food Pride until its closing. After retiring he missed working with the public and returned to work in the Produce Department at the local Walmart. Erv served as an alderman on the Prairie du Chien city council. He was also a member and past president of the local Lions Club. Erv was a long time active member of the United Methodist Church in Prairie du Chien where he was a lay speaker and served on the church council and numerous committees. 

Erv enjoyed gardening and always had a fresh bouquet for his wife to enjoy and brighten her day. He especially liked trying a new and unusual flower or plant. He loved to go fishing and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area or having his ritual cup of coffee and conversation with friends. Most of all he treasured spending time with his family.

Erv is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Karen of Prairie du Chien; daughters, Brenda (Ricky) Fabert of Prairie du Chien and Vikki (Donald) Hafke of Priaire du Chien; grandchildren, April (Clayton) Smelser of Hudson, Iowa, Zakery (Ana) Hafke of Prairie du Chien and Kaleb Hafke of Prairie du Chien; great-granddaughters, Adelyn and Evelyn Hafke of Prairie du Chien; his church family and faithful companion Kitty Kitty.

Erv was preceded in death by his daughter, Penny; his parents, Harry and Marie Mueller, parents-in-law, Clarence and Arrah Lavon Polkow.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, at the Prairie du Chien United Methodist Church, Prairie du Chien, with a two hour visitation from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. before services at the church on Saturday. Rev. Barb Cook will be the Officiant. Private Family Inurnment will be at East Side Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa.

Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Prairie du Chien, is helping the family with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
