Dorothy J. Zapf, 96, of Littleport, died Sunday, June 5, 2016, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader.

Dorothy was born February 29, 1920, in Alden, Iowa, to Wayne and Cecile Hunter. She graduated from the University of Iowa as a Registered Nurse in 1941. She married Lowell (Soapy) Zapf in Littleport in 1941.

Dorothy had an insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge. She loved to read and discuss world and local events. 

She had a spirit, smile and strength we all admired.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell; sister, Charlotte Montour; brother, Kenneth Hunter; son-in-law, Bob Lehnertz and daughter-in-law, Marcia Zapf.

Survivors include her six children, Pat Lehnertz, Peg (John) Staska, Tom Zapf, Anne (George) Fick, J.P. (Cindy) Zapf, Mike (Joni) Zapf; eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

A private memorial mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elkader.
