In his first season as MFL MarMac’s head softball coach, Jerald Kleve said he’s looking forward to the enthusiasm and athleticism his team will bring to the table.

That athleticism, coupled with team speed, is one of the team’s biggest strengths, he said. The roster also boasts strong leadership in its four seniors—Chaun’te Drahn, Jasmine Stocker, Becca Harms and Mollie Ward.

“I would like to thank the four seniors for coming back out this season,” Kleve said.

Kleve said the experience of assistant coach Melissa Ward, who played softball at Luther College, will be a big asset to the team, as well.

The four seniors are the only upper classmen playing for the Bulldogs this season, so Kleve said a number of young players, notably sophomore Reagan Butikofer; freshmen Hannah Schutte, Kyleigh Picha, Lizzie Herzmann, Jayde Schubert, Keagan Moose, Ellie Kinley and Brenna Boland; and eighth grader Jordan Schubert, will fill big roles on the team.

“We are young, but talented and good listeners,” he said. “We hope to get better as the season progresses.”

Kleve said hitting, as well as knowledge of the game, are two areas MFL MarMac will look to improve upon throughout the season. With his experience and ability to adapt on the fly, he said he also hopes to give the girls confidence in how they play.
