Gwen Kennedy, 85, former Elkader resident, died Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Victorian Manor in Pace, Florida. She was born in Elkport, IA to Homer D and Violet E (Duwe) Beck. She was baptized in her home by Reverend Paul Kitterer in 1937 and was confirmed at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Guttenberg in 1944.  She graduated from Elkader Public School in May 1948.  In July 1969, she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from Area 1 Voc-Tech School in Calmar, Iowa. Gwen had a passion for caring for people and worked as an aide and nurse in hospitals in Iowa (Elkader and West Union) and in West Palm Beach, FL. She retired in 1993 after 32 years of nursing.

She married Robert Bankes in June 1948 and had three children. The marriage ended in 1974. In 1977, she married Martin Asche. They moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, in 1979. Martin passed away in 1990. In 1993 she married William Kennedy who passed in 2006.

She moved to Pace, Florida in 2010.

Gwen enjoyed counted cross stitch, embroidery, card playing, fishing, singing, and playing musical instruments.

She is survived by her three children, Joel (Karen) Bankes, Julia Bankes Buis, and Allan (Deb) Bankes; her brother, Dennis (Mary) Beck; her sister, Kay (Ray) Possehl, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; second husband (Asche) and third husband (Kennedy), and son-in-law (Fred Buis).
