Leonard “Lennie” G. Schmidt, 93, of Prairie du Chien, formerly of Bloomington, passed away Thursday, March 24, surrounded by his loving family at Crossing Rivers Health Center in Prairie du Chien. 

He was born along with his twin sister, Lucille, in the township of Ellenboro on June 14, 1922, the son of Arthur and Florence (Keene) Schmidt. Later, at the age of fourteen, the family relocated to the Bloomington area where he graduated from high school in 1940. Leonard married Arlene Hermsen, at St. Mary’s Church in Bloomington, on Feb. 4, 1948. Together they raised six children while farming in rural Glen Haven for thirty-seven years. They moved to Bloomington in 1985. Lennie was on the Board of Directors and an agent for Bloomington Farmers Mutual Insurance Company for twenty-five years. Arlene and Lennie spent many active years enjoying square dancing, bowling, golfing, and playing cards. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Holy Name Society. Lennie was an avid follower of the Milwaukee Brewers, Green Bay Packers, and University of Wisconsin Badgers. He dearly loved his children and grandchildren and keeping up with their activities.

Leonard is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Arlene; and six children, James (Glori) of Menomonie; Jane (David) Farmer of Export, Pa., Dennis (special friend, Susan Schroeder) of DeForest, Judy (Peter) Drone of Bloomington, Margie (William) Miller of St. Paul, Minn., John (Sara) of Bloomington; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his twin sister, Lucille Fassbender of Winter Park, Fla.; sister-in-law Gloria Schmidt of Prairie du Chien and nieces and nephews.

Lennie was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, twins Arthur “Bud” (Adeline) Schmidt and Alta (Harold) Weittenhiller; and brothers, Ivan, Clarence, and Harold and daughter-in-law, Beverly (Noble) Schmidt; a brother-in-law, Richard Fassbender.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 1, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bloomington. Family and friends may call on Friday, April 1, from 9 a.m. until time of services at the church. Martin Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Bloomington is serving the family.
