Janice E. Barnes, 74, of Manitowoc, died Wednesday, March 23, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Green Bay.

Janice was born on Sept. 3, 1941 in Arlington, Wis., daughter of the late Ivan and Viola (Carncross) Unke. She attended schools in Lodi and graduated with the class of 1959 from Lodi High School. She continued her education at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education. On June 29, 1963 Janice married James R. Barnes in Arlington. Janice was an elementary music teacher in Wauzeka, Detroit Mich., Melrose, Prairie du Chien, and Schultz Elementary School in Mishicot, until her retirement in 2004. Janice also taught piano in Melrose. She was a member of Lakeshore United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women serving as a State Officer, the Missions Committee and directed choirs in the churches that her husband Rev. Jim served. She also sang with the Dudley Birder Chorale.

She is survived by her husband Rev. James R. Barnes, Manitowoc; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff (Traci) Barnes, Fond du Lac; Jeremy (Lisa) Barnes, Lorton, Va.; four grandchildren, Rachel (Jared) Krumbein, Fond du Lac; Jessica Barnes, Fond du Lac; Samantha (Michael) Rachal, Racine; Jasmine Grant, Milwaukee; two great grandchildren, Jamie Snyder, Gunnar Rachal; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Dea Lenore (Marvin) Hebel, Fond du Lac; Katherine (Dale) Waugh, Suamico; two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Roger (Della) Barnes, Richland Center, Lyall (Alta) Barnes, Viroqua, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, at Lakeshore United Methodist Church, 411 Reed Avenue, Manitowoc. The Rev. Carly Kuntz will officiate. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Jens, Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Homes & Crematory of Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
