John Joseph Nagel, 73, of Elkader, died Thursday, March 10, 2016, at the Good Neighbor Society Home in Manchester. He was born in Fort Madison, IA, to John A. and Genevieve (Dinan) Nagel. He graduated from Elkader High School in 1961.

He was united in marriage to Kay Zittergruen on August 10, 1963, at Immanual Lutheran Church in Elkport. Two children were born to this union. Following their marriage, John worked for his dad (United Roofing) until he started with the state. John worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 35 years, retiring in December of 2005.

He served as a volunteer Fireman in Elkader for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, being a Little League Coach for his children; and as they grew older, he enjoyed following them in their sporting events. Spending time with his grandchildren was very special to him. After he retired, going to the garage to fix things or just tinker around was his favorite pastime.

John is survived by his wife, Kay, of Elkader, son Brett (Lori) Nagel of Greeley; daughter, Cheri (Gary) Meisner of Greeley; five grandchildren, Dorise and John Nagel; Genevieve, Joseph and Elizabeth Meisner; in-laws, Bill (Jeanne) Zittergruen, Dick (Darla) Zittergruen; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 14, 2016, at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport with Pastor Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating. Interment was at East Side Cemetery, Elkader. The visitation was 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2016, at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader and one hour before services at the church on Monday.
