Donald Robert Kann, 90, of Guttenberg, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Funeral services were Friday, March 4, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg. Visitation was before services at the funeral home.

Interment was at Kann-St. Michael Cemetery, rural Guttenberg.

Don was born the fifth child of Gregory and Anna (Miller) Kann, Jan. 12, 1926, on the family farm near Guttenberg.

He attended St. Mary’s Elementary School until eighth grade. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, served on a destroyer escort and was honorably discharged in May of 1946. He then worked at the John Deere Works in Dubuque for one year.

He married Helen Meyer on Aug. 1, 1947; to this union six children were born. When his brother-in-law was killed in a tractor accident, he took over the farming operation and farmed for the next 58 years. He enjoyed reading, working in his shop, hunting, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen; children, James (Marilyn) Kann, Ruth Hamilton, Wendy (Mike) Gossett, Dinah (Keith) Hodapp, Linda (Duane) Lampson and Charlene (Tom) Staade; 17 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren plus two on the way and one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Owen Kann; and three sisters-in-law, Betty Kann, Lydia Kann, and Anna Mae Meyer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons-in-law, Douglas Hamilton, Terry Crowe, and Charles Ball; and siblings, Arlene (Ray) St. John, Virgil "Bud" Kann, Fritz (Rosemary) Kann, Duane Kann, Jeanette (Wilford) Berns, and sister-in-law, Gerry Kann.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Kann-St. Michael Cemetery or a charity of your choice.
