Wayne E. Baumgartner, 84, of rural St. Olaf, died suddenly on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at his home. He was born February 27, 1931, at home on the family farm, rural West Union, to Elmer and Gladys (Olson) Baumgartner. He attended country school through the eighth grade, and then farmed with his parents for a time.

On September 8, 1957, he was united in marriage to Joyce Crawford, and they celebrated 58 years together. One daughter, Vicki, and two sons, Marcus and Steven, were born to this union. Wayne worked as a roofer for five years, route salesman for Hyde Beverage for 10 years, his uncle, Oscar Possehl laying terrazzo flooring, and as a custodian at Central Community Schools for 21 years, where he retired as head custodian.

Wayne was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed watching sports, making wine, camping and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife Joyce of St. Olaf; daughter, Vicki (Dan) Fleege of Dubuque; sons, Marcus (Dianna) Baumgartner of St. Olaf and Steven (Tena) Baumgartner of Ankeny; six grandchildren, Nathan Fleege, Molly Lambropoulos, Jason Glawe, Jodi Casper, Alex Baumgartner, Ella Baumgartner; three great-grandchildren, Anya, Beckett, and Theron; brother, Lloyd (Ruth) Baumgartner of Iowa City; sisters, Betty Marmann of Elkader, Mary (Dick) Heiden of Elkader, Louise (Larry) Grimm of Kasson, MN and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Gladys Baumgartner; infant sister, Dorothy Baumgartner; brother, Earl Baumgartner and brother-in-law, Everett Marmann.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 21, 2016, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Inurnment will be at East Side Cemetery, Elkader, at a later date. Visitation is from 2-5 p.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader and after 10 a.m. on Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Central Community Hospital, American Lung Society or the American Heart Association.
