Effective Jan. 1, Guttenberg residents will see a change in the company that the city contracts to haul garbage. Kluesner Sanitation of Farley will begin collection residential waste, succeeding Waste Management of Prairie du Chien, Wis.

The city council awarded the contract to Kluesner's in November after reviewing bids from other services, including the city's longtime waste hauler, Waste Management. In December, the city council lowered residential garbage rates by $1 a month, effective Jan. 1.

New blue totes were delivered beginning last week. Each tote has a serial number that is registered to a specific address and stays with the property.

Waste Management's last pick-up day was Tuesday, Dec. 29, after which their green totes were to be collected.

Kluesner Sanitation employees were going door-to-door with a letter telling customers about the change and answering any questions.

The weekly pick up day will remain Tuesday. Residents should not use the new totes until Tuesday, Jan. 5. The new totes should be placed in the usual place where garbage has been collected in the past. The collection schedule will stay the same, and the sanitation trucks will begin about 7 a.m. on Tuesdays, so all garbage and recycling are to be set out by that time.

Senior rate properties will receive a smaller-size 35-gal. tote, but those who would like a larger tote can contact Kluesner Sanitation or the Guttenberg city office. The city council at its meeting on Jan. 4 will consider senior rate adjustments to reflect tote size.

Kluesner Sanitation urges residents to recycle as much as possible. Customers are reminded that NO GLASS will be accepted for recycling. Items suitable for recycling include aluminum, cardboard (corrugated and single layer), magazines and slick paper, white and colored paper, phone books, plastic containers and metal cans.
