Phyllis Marilyn Bergan, 81, of Elkader, passed away November 30, 2015, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 23, 1934, in Central City, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Rachel (Batchelder) Goodlove. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Roland Walz. Marilyn attended country school in the Central City area and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1952, and then Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids. She practiced as a beautician in her mother’s beauty shop, Ra Chellen’s Beauty Salon in Elkader. After starting her family, she opened a salon at her home on the farm in rural Elkader.

She was united in marriage to Thomas Joseph Bergan of Elkader, on September 17, 1957, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Volga. Together they raised six children. Joe and Marilyn lived on their farm on Chicken Ridge for 40 years before retiring to a home in Elkader. She was a long time member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Women’s Guild in Elkader.

Marilyn enjoyed a variety of crafts such as sewing, crocheting, and ceramics. She shared her talents by making many handmade gifts for her family and friends. Marilyn also took pleasure from working with the St. Joe’s Crafters. In her early years, Marilyn was an avid gardener and preserved much of her produce. Marilyn and Joe loved to play cards, and belonged to two card clubs. 

Marilyn is survived by her husband of 58 years, her six children, Cindy (Paul) Francis of Carroll, IA, Jerry (Susan) Bergan of Elkader, Craig (Angela) Bergan of Elkader, Brad (Mary Jo) Bergan of Volga, Julie (Matt) Dahling of Elkader, and Mary (Joe) Flansburg of Central City, IA; 16 grandchildren,  Joe (Carolyn) Francis, Dan (Kristin) Francis, and Sarah Francis; Jeremy, Brandon, Jonathan, and Danielle Bergan; Calvin and Austin Bergan, Matthew (Mary) Bergan, Justin, and Megan Bergan; Kyle Dahling, and Jenny (Sam) Ferriss; Ashley and Jessica Flansburg; two great-grandchildren Tommy Francis and Josie Ebel; two sisters, Rosalyn Hurley of Volga, and Linda Walz of West Union; and many other family and friends.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, and brother, Eldon Walz; as well as three brothers-in-law, Daryl Thornton, Kenny Hurley, and Mike Roach. 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 3, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader; celebrant was Rev. Paul R. Peters. Inurnment followed St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Elkader. Visitation: was from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 2, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader with a Scripture Service at 7 p.m.
