Robert James Gerndt, 77, of McGregor, Iowa died Saturday, Sept. 19, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. 

Robert James was born on Aug. 17, 1938 to Harry and Helen (Trygg) Gerndt in McGregor, Iowa. He attended school in McGregor, Iowa. 

He was united in marriage to Ruth Bothel on Aug. 15, 1964 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Robert started working as a teenager mowing lawns for residents of McGregor and worked along side his dad on construction projects. He also drove truck for various people and at age nineteen, Robert drove a mail route out of Decorah. At age thirty-two, he went to work for Clayton County Secondary Roads Department and retired from the county in 2000 at age sixty- two. Robert enjoyed spending time with his family, visiting with friends, working in his shop with wood and old wheels and collecting die cast collectibles. He loved gardening with his wife of fifty-one years. Robert was a fan of old time country music and enjoyed listening to Maggie Mae. He adored his dog “Buddy.” He was very proud that he had never smoked or even had a sip of beer.

Robert is survived by his wife, Ruth Gerndt of McGregor; children, Gene (Angie) Gerndt of Elgin, Karen (Andrew) Reichard of McGregor, and Harry (Darcy) Gerndt of Farmersburg; eight grandchildren, Robert, Marissa and Joshua Reichard, Taylor, Ayla and Katelyn Gerndt, and Jade and Zoee Gerndt.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Helen Gerndt; son, Johnnie James Gerndt; brother, Ross Gerndt and sister, Rita (Harold Jr.) Spores.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 23, 2015 from 3-7 pm at Thornburg- Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in McGregor, Iowa and one hour before services at the funeral home on Thursday.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in McGregor, Iowa.

Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Robert’s honor, may be directed to the Mar Mac EMS or McGregor Hook and Ladder No. 1.
