U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin was in Prairie du Chien Tuesday touring the St. Feriole Island river wall with city and county officials and discussing her legislation to boost waterfront revitalization efforts. The Waterfront Community Revitalization and Resiliency Act would support community efforts to make the most of water resources by attracting water-dependent industries and investments that leverage water sustainably, revitalizing neighborhoods, and enhancing recreation and tourism.

“Here in Prairie du Chien, and throughout Wisconsin, waterfronts like the Mississippi River are a critical asset for our quality of life, as well as for our long term economic security,” Senator Baldwin said. “Today’s tour of the St. Feriole Island river wall shows that boosting our waterfront communities is not just an environmental goal, it is an economic necessity. That is why I am proud to introduce commonsense legislation that will support waterfront communities like Prairie du Chien to make the most of their local water resources.”

“The introduction of this legislation is a very encouraging development toward the future and expanded use of not only the waterfront in Prairie du Chien but waterfronts across the nation. The waterfront here is vital to several components of the local economy, especially tourism,” City Administrator Aaron Kramer said. “Any effort, whether local, state or federal, to make the waterfront more accessible and enjoyable for visitors and local residents alike, is a positive step, and Senator Baldwin’s work is very much appreciated.”

This summer, Senator Baldwin has traveled the state and visited waterfront projects in Green Bay, Wausau, Superior and La Crosse.

Over 30 Wisconsin leaders and regional and national stakeholders, including Prairie du Chien Mayor Dave Hemmer, have endorsed Senator Baldwin’s legislation. Senator Baldwin was joined Tuesday by Mayor Dave Hemmer, City Administrator Aaron Kramer, Crawford County Chairman Peter Flesch, Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce President Robert Moses, Prairie du Chien Economic Development Corporation President Robert McDonald and Prairie du Chien Parks and Rec Director Mike Ulrich.

During her stop in Prairie du Chien, Senator Baldwin also visited the site of the Aug. 30 train derailment near Campion Boat Landing and discussed changes that need to be made to local railroads and regulation of them.
