Two incumbents—Tonya Meyer and Sharon Greener—and one newcomer—Collin Stubbs—hope to fill three seats on the MFL MarMac School Board. Current board president Patty Burkle has chosen not to run again. The election will be held Tuesday, Sept. 8, with polling places open from noon to 8 p.m. Polling places within the district include the Farmersburg Community Center, Monona Community Center and McGregor Public Library. If elected, Meyer, Greener and Stubbs will serve on the board with Gina Roys, Brian Meyer, Joshua Grau and Jonathon Moser.

Tonya Meyer—

I reside in Monona with my husband, Mike, and our two daughters, Devon and Hadyn. I spent the majority of my childhood growing up in Marquette and McGregor. I am a graduate of MFL MarMac. I’ve worked at Family Dentistry Associates in Monona as a dental hygienist for the past nine years. I enjoy volunteering in the community and at the school. In 2010, I became a board member of the Smith and Bulldog Childcare Centers. During that time, I served as secretary, vice president and president. After four years on the childcare board, I joined the MFL MarMac school board. I’ve been a member of the school board since March 2014.

Why are you running for re-election?

I am running for school board election because it is important to me that the children in our communities get the best education possible. I also want to be a voice for the people in our school district.

How will you interact with or address concerns from people within the district?

My job allows me to interact with people in the district on a daily basis. I attend local events and fundraisers as well as school sports, plays and activities. I feel it is important that people and staff within the district work together and that issues/concerns be addressed with an open mind while considering different perspectives.

What would you like to see accomplished during this next term?

During this next term, I would like to see the district continue to expand on technology and marketing. I would also like to see an increase in the number of teacher assistants or volunteers in the classrooms due to larger class sizes.

Any other brief comments?

Since joining the school board, I have become very passionate about children’s education and the success of our school district. I hope to continue serving our school district as a board member.

Sharon Greener—

I grew up in southwestern Wisconsin, attended college at UW-Stevens Point and moved to Iowa in 1985 for a job opportunity. I am married to Bruce Greener and have four children: Tori Ritchie of Prairie du Chien, Harlan Greener of Farmersburg, Adam Greener and Isaac Greener, all whom attended MFL MarMac Community Schools. I retired from Effigy Mounds National Monument in 2014. I currently work at Maggie’s Diner outside McGregor. I volunteered as a youth basketball coach with the district for five years.  I have been on the school board since 2009.

Why are you running for re-election?

I am running for re-election because I feel that a good education is one of the most important gifts we can give our children and grandchildren. I feel that I instill a positive influence and a rational voice to the school board. I enjoy being involved in all aspects of education from academics, fine arts and athletics to clubs, and community involvement.

How will you interact with or address concerns from people within the district?

In the past, people within our district have felt comfortable calling me on the telephone or emailing me. I will continue to respond to these concerns with the appropriate information they request. I will also pass along to the larger board any issues which need further consideration.

What would you like to see accomplished during this next term?

I would like to see the long range plan which the School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC) drafted in 2014 implemented. I would like to see special emphasis placed on appropriate and continued use of technology in the school district, implementation of the school wellness plan and marketing the school district to attract families into the area. I will collaborate with my fellow board members to ensure the on-going financial stability of the school district. Our current financial stability is the foundation for the outstanding education the staff of MFL MarMac provides to its students.

Collin Stubbs—

I live in rural Luana with my wife, Shelly, and sons, Chase and Ethan. I am a senior regional supply chain manager for Cabela’s. I have served as a volunteer youth wrestling, football, and baseball coach for the past 11 years. I also served as a member of the selection committee used for the hiring process of the new high school principal.

Why are you running for election?

I want to help ensure our school continues to move forward in a positive direction by providing the best possible educational experience for all students.

How will you interact with or address concerns from people within the district?

I will strive to be an honest and reliable voice for the community and convey any thoughts and concerns expressed to me from the people within the district back to the other members of the board.

What would you like to see accomplished during this next term?

I think it is important for us to continue to find new and innovative ways to enhance the educational experience for our children and to keep our school district moving forward in a positive direction.  I personally think we should all be very proud of the recent accomplishments our school district has experienced and I look forward to being able to contribute to the future efforts of continuous improvement.

Any other brief comments?

I’m looking forward to the opportunity to serve alongside all the other current members of the board and school administration.
