MFL MarMac superintendent Dale Crozier said at Monday night’s school board meeting that Postville recently approached him about sharing some girls sports with MFL MarMac due to low numbers.

Although roughly the same size enrollment-wise as MFL MarMac, Postville is limited in the number of athletes at times, said Crozier, because some students cannot participate for religious reasons.

Crozier said volleyball and cross country were not part of the offer, but basketball, softball, golf and track and field were. Last year, MFL MarMac had lower numbers in golf and track, so co-oping would keep the team 2A. However, the Bulldogs boast healthy numbers for basketball and softball, so a co-op would push the team into 3A, which Crozier said MFL MarMac is not willing to do. The board gave him the go-ahead to pursue sharing as long as it would not affect MFL MarMac’s 2A status.

Other topics discussed at the meeting included:

  • Crozier said MFL MarMac is looking at developing a trap shooting program in the future.
  • The board approved a 28E agreement with the city of McGregor regarding Turner Park. Per the agreement, MFL MarMac will donate $20,000 to the Turner Park: Fitness for All Ages project and, in turn, have use of the park, including the track and updated sports fields, for physical education classes and sports practices.
  • High school principal David Ross said the fall sports of football, volleyball and cross country got underway Monday. Over 50 boys are out for football, he said, so head coach Tom Oppelt requested purchasing additional shoulder pads.
  • McGregor Center principal Denise Mueller said she’s preparing for the middle school to go one-to-one with laptops this school year. Unlike the high school students, who get to take their laptops home, she said the middle school students’ laptops will remain at school, with students checking them out in the morning.
  • Elementary school principal Kathy Koether said she was glad to find that, so far, at least seven new students will be at the elementary this school year. Over 70 kindergartners are projected, she said, along with 62 first graders, 70 second graders and 59 third graders. Koether also said, on Monday, school supplies were put out for parents registering their kids to take if needed. The supplies were given through a church donation, as well as other individual contributions. Most are already gone, she said, noting that, “It’s a good indication that families need and appreciate the school supplies.”
