The Clayton County Fair, a family tradition for 161 years, opens this week at the fairgrounds in National, located east of Highway 52 five miles north of Garnavillo.

The fair board has planned a busy schedule from the opening on Wednesday, Aug. 5, to the concluding livestock auction on Monday, Aug. 10.

Pack up the family and enjoy free carnival rides, family grandstand entertainment, animal and 4-H exhibits, and great fair food. The fair is a great value for families — in addition to the free carnival rides, there is free admission for children under 12.

Daily admission is $5 on Wednesday, $10 on Thursday and $15 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Season admission is $35. There is free parking and free grandstand entertainment.

The daily schedule includes the following highlights. For specific times, see the ad in last week's issue of The Press or visit www.claytoncountyfair.com.

Wednesday, Aug. 5: There will be a horse show in the morning, an evening barbecue, and at 6:30 p.m. a flag-raising ceremony and the fair queen pageant. At 7:00 p.m. the annual 4-H style and talent show will be held.

Thursday, Aug. 6: Judging will include rabbits, dogs, and open class foods. At 8:30 p.m. Jon Pardi will entertain the grandstand audience. The country music singer and songwriter had his first top 10 single with "Up All Night."  A teen dance will follow his performance at 10:00 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 7: Animal judging will include goats, bucket bottle calf, sheep, and beef. Lorrie Morgan, country singer and songwriter, will headline the grandstand entertainment at 8:30 p.m., and a teen dance begins at 10:00 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 8: Swine, dairy and goat shows, kiddie tractor pull, a demolition derby at 1:00 p.m.,  and a 5:00 p.m. pony rodeo. At 7:00 p.m. the Bull Riders of America will present the Clayton County Bull Bash. A teen dance rounds out the day at 10:00 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 9: 4-H and FFA dairy and livestock judging contests will open the day, followed by a truck and tractor pull at 11:00 a.m., one of the largest in the state.  The afternoon will feature a kiddie calf show and youth Olympics. Celebrity donkey races begin at 5:00 p.m. in the grandstand.

Monday, Aug. 10: The annual livestock auciton begins at 9:00 a.m.
