This year, Clayton County is working to update its multi-jurisdictional, multi-hazard mitigation plan. Meetings will be held in the county, seeking public input, with one being held in Monona on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 5:30 p.m., at the community center.

“The county got a grant to cover the cost of a plan update,” said Monona City Administrator Dan Canton, speaking to the city council at its Aug. 3 meeting. In order to receive FEMA funding if a disaster should occur, having an updated plan is necessary, he said.

Canton said one goal of the meeting will be to rank the hazards threatening the community, noting any new concerns or mitigation actions that could surface over the next five years. The meeting will also include updating the status of previous mitigation goals and activities.

The hazard mitigation plan will provide the county, and the communities within it, with guidance on preventing losses—both human and property—from future hazardous occurrences. The plan will consider the community’s susceptibility to and the historical impact of natural and man-made hazards.

Another public meeting will be held in Guttenberg, at the city hall, on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 6 p.m. Additional planning sessions will be announced for other jurisdictions as well.

REAP grant

Canton also filled the council in on his plans to submit a Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) grant application for improvements at the city park.

The city submitted an application last year to construct new restrooms at the park, but was unsuccessful. Canton said he added some more details to the plan this year, hoping to make the application more attractive. Now, in addition to the restrooms, he proposed constructing ADA-compliant sidewalks to each of the park shelters from the playground area. He also suggested adding several handicap-accessible picnic tables within each shelter. If Monona receives the $50,455 requested for the project, several shade trees, and possibly a rain garden, will be part of the improvements as well.
