Elizabeth “Betty” Valley, 92, of Madison, passed away at Agrace HospiceCare on Thursday, June 25, with her loving family by her side. 

Betty was born July 14, 1922, to John and Vila (Boylan) Elliott. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Prairie du Chien. Betty married the love of her life, Cyril L. Valley, on Valentine’s Day, 1942. They were married for 53 years. He preceded her in death in 1994. She worked at Manchester’s department store for over 20 years.

Betty was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Catholic Women’s Club, and the Elks Club. She was an avid Packers and Badgers fan, enjoyed camping, playing cribbage and Euchre, gambling, traveling and spending time with family, especially her 17 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. According to her, each of the generations got smarter and smarter –little geniuses. “Gramma Valley” was a special person in their lives. She was extremely proud of her family and her wonderful Irish heritage. 

Betty is survived by her eight children, Jane (Clem) Steele, of Dubuque, Iowa; Karen (Steve) Clark, of McFarland; Susan (Dennis) Grosse, of Madison; Joni (Tom) Aeschbach, of Waunakee; Jim (Patricia) Valley, of DeForest; Tom Valley (Lorna Hill), of Madison; Jill (Tom) Geier, of Madison; Jeff Valley (Deb Happel) of Postville, Iowa; grandchildren, Teri (Dave Sivertsen) Steele, Daniel (Lisa) Steele, Amy (Rick) Hruby, Michael (Lisa) Clark, Michelle (Nate) Salverson, Brandon (Heather Smith) Grosse, Brooke Grosse, Andrea (Matt) Klemm, Alex Valley (Keisha Berry), Jaime (Adam) Montanye, Nicole Valley, Angel (Chris) Hebbe, Therese Valley (Mark Stevens), Tiffany (Jeff) Mack and Lindsay (Ben) Engelke. She is further survived by her sisters, Donna Hellenbrand, of Waunakee; Sheila (Jim) Burke, of Montello; sister-in-law, Mollie Elliott, of Sun Prairie, and many loving nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her husband Cyril, she was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Kay Elliott, Sandy Hudson and Judy Waterhouse; her brothers, Bill, Jack, and Patrick Michael Elliott; a granddaughter, Maureen Ann Steele ; a grandson Aaron Aeschbach and many in-laws. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 401 S. Owen St., Madison, at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, with Monsignor Kenneth Fiedler presiding. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Madison. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass. 

The family would like to thank Betty’s “special angel” Denise, and all of her friends and card players at All Saints. The family would also like to thank the caregivers and staff at Pine View, St. Mary’s Hospital and Agrace HospiceCare for their compassionate care.
