Michael Dale Gilkes, 56, of Oshkosh, died Thursday, March 19, at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Minneapolis, Minn. 

Michael was born Dec. 6, 1958 in Prairie du Chien, the son of Franklin and Margaret (Valley) Gilkes. He graduated from West Grant High School in 1977 and received his HVAC degree from Western Technical College in La Crosse. 

Michael was united in marriage with Mary Griffin on April 10, 1990 in Marinette. Michael worked in the cheese making industry in Wisconsin and most recently was a business owner of Mr. Mouse Cheese. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, watching Packer football and most of all he loved spending time with his family.

Michael is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Mary of Oshkosh; two sons from a previous marriage, Jason Gilkes of Oshkosh, and Cory Gilkes of Green Bay; step-daughters, Melissa Kasper of Oshkosh, Mary Griffin of Appleton, and Alice Griffin of Neenah; stepsons, Ronald Griffin of Green Bay, Michael Griffin of Appleton, and Shawn (Angie) Griffin of Prairie du Chien; twenty grandchildren and one great-grandson; parents, Franklin and Margaret Gilkes of Prairie du Chien; brothers, Pat Gilkes of Neenah, Tim Gilkes of Prairie du Chien, Jeff Gilkes of Madison, and sister Julie Gilkes of Prairie du Chien; uncles, Dick Valley of New York State and Darrell Gilkes of Prairie du Chien.

Michael was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Viola Gilkes and Veleta “Meanie” and Raymond Steele and brother-in-law, Ray Sobacki.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. with a 4 p.m. Rosary at the Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Prairie du Chien. There will be a one hour visitation before the Mass on Friday at the church. 

Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday, March 27, at 12 p.m. at Saint Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. Rev. James C. Weighner will be the Celebrant. Burial will be held at Brodtville Cemetery.
