Van G. Ferguson, 61, of Richland Center, died on Monday, Feb. 2, following a nine-month struggle with cancer.

He was born in Richland Center on Oct. 13, 1953, the son of Glenn and Kathleen (Brewer) Ferguson. His childhood involved playing games with his brother and friends, visiting his favorite spot—his grandparents’ farm, squirrel hunting with his father and brother, church league softball, and a huge circle of friends. After a life-changing motorcycle accident, he completed graduation from the University of Wisconsin, he earned his teaching certificate from UW Platteville and married Karen in 1981. He then began a 25 year teaching career in science at River Ridge (West Grant) High School, where he was an effective and respected teacher. His encouragement changed many young people’s lives. Van retired at age 55, and moved closer to the UW Madison, enjoying football and friends. He is endowing two scholarships. One is for a UW Platteville freshman from River Ridge, and another is for a UW Richland freshman. He loved animals and supported the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin. Entertainment favorites included rock bands, movies, plays and auto races.

Survivors include, his mother Kathleen Ferguson of Richland Center; brother Brent (Glenda) Ferguson of Richland Center; sister Connie (Howard) Anderson of Evansville; nephew Jeffrey (Natalie) Anderson of Georgetown, Texas; niece Kara (Koby) Schellenger of Oshkosh; aunts and uncles, Irene Pobiecke of Readstown,  Edward (Dee) Brewer of McFarland; his two feline companions Storm and Malibu; cousins; many good friends and his ‘kids’ from River Ridge.

Van was preceded in death by his father Glenn; his grandparents; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, at the Pratt Memorial Chapel. Pastor Randy Sanders will officiate and burial will be in the Richland Center Cemetery. Friends may call at the Pratt Memorial Chapel on Thursday, Feb. 5, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. or on Friday morning from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. Van’s family suggests memorials in his name be directed to the American Cancer Society.
