As the weather is cold and the snow deep, it may seem premature to start making plans for Aug. 7-9.The impetus of a “Celebrate the Mississippi River” event came from Mayor Russ Loven who has participated in a number of Mississippi River Mayors' Conferences.   The Mayors' conference agendas always include encouragement for river towns to celebrate the river with music, the arts, food, fun and education.

Mayor Loven, Emily Moser (GD&T) and Juanita Loven have been working on a preliminary schedule of events which was unveiled at the annual Guttenberg Development & Tourism meeting on Jan. 12.

However, there are several agenda items that need advance notice:

1) Calling all artists to produce Mississippi River and Guttenberg history artwork, including all art forms, to be included in an art show hosted by The Creativity Center and Shepherd Gallery.

2) In addition, everyone of all ages is encouraged to submit an essay, story, song, poetry pertaining to the river. Depending upon the response, entries will be included in the schedule. These should be submitted to Mayor Loven, P.O. Box 610, Guttenberg, IA 52052.

3)  In addition to GD&T’s fishing tournament, everyone of all ages, is invited to submit pictures of themselves holding their fish.  Pictures can be submitted to Emily Moser via e-mail These pictures will be displayed during the festival as well as on the Guttenberg website.

Anyone interested in more information about any of these items, should contact Emily Moser, GD&T Director, at the Welcome Center, 252-2323.
